5 Types of EHRs and Their Most Important Features
Oracle outlines five major types of electronic health record (EHR) systems: on-premises, cloud-based, specialized, integrated and AI-native. While legacy systems require organizations to maintain their own infrastructure, cloud EHRs reduce IT demands and simplify scaling and updates. Specialized systems serve fields such as oncology, while integrated EHRs connect clinical data with finance, HR and supply chain applications. Emerging AI-native systems use agents to automate tasks, coordinate workflows and connect disparate data sources. When choosing an EHR, providers should prioritize security, interoperability, scalability, usability, analytics, workflow automation, mobile access and AI capabilities.
