Monitoring & Stability Solutions for Tailings Dams

If there is one topic that is really keeping the management of mining firms awake at night, it is the reliability and stability of Tailings Dams. Many of you may well now be asking yourself, what are Tailings Dams? Why are they causing such worry to the Mining Industry?

Before we get to Tailings Dams, let's understand "Tailings".

From Newmont Mining – “Tailings are created as the mined ore is processed into particles of fine sand through crushing, grinding and milling. The valuable minerals are separated from the rest of the milled rock particles either through physical or chemical processes. After removal of the valuable minerals the remaining milled rock slurry, now referred to as tailings, is pumped or flows by gravity to an engineered impoundment area. These engineered impoundments (“Dams”) are carefully designed, constructed and operated to safely contain the tailings and water even during extreme climatic or seismic events."

The reliability & stability of Tailings Dams is a topic that has been acutely brought to the fore by the tragedy that happened in January this year at the Córrego do Feijão iron-ore mine in Brumadinho, Brazil. The Tailings Dam at this facility failed releasing 12 million cubic meters of sludge, resulting in hundreds of dead and missing. This tragedy is just the latest in Tailings Dams failure as 11 have ruptured since the year 2000. [researchers at World Mine Tailings Failures (WMTF)]
