Astec Employs Altair EDEM to Redesign Aggregate Dryer for Energy Savings
Astec sought to improve the energy efficiency of aggregate drum dryers used in asphalt production. Using Altair EDEM, engineers simulated aggregate motion and heat transfer within rotating drums to analyze the impact of flight design on material veiling. Virtual testing enabled the comparison of multiple designs, leading to the development of a new “V Flight” configuration that optimized material distribution. The redesigned dryer reduced drying time, lowered fuel consumption, and improved process understanding. Simulation shortened development cycles, reduced environmental impact, and provided Astec with a powerful tool for optimizing and troubleshooting equipment in the field.
