Case Study
Bringing Network Visibility to Unmanaged Power Utility Substations
This case study describes how a U.S. power utility improved visibility across remote substations transitioning from analog to digital systems. These hard-to-reach sites lacked effective monitoring, creating operational, cybersecurity, and regulatory risks under the NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection requirements. The utility deployed customized IOTA network analysis appliances at strategic substations to capture real-time and historical traffic without affecting network security or performance. Engineers gained remote access to packet and metadata analysis, enabling them to monitor latency, retransmissions, packet loss, availability, bandwidth, DNS, and more than 200 applications and protocols. The solution reduced the need for on-site specialists, accelerated troubleshooting, isolate
