Building community around esports
George Mason University, Virginia’s largest public research university, partnered with Lenovo to transform a student-led esports club into a thriving varsity-level esports program that promotes student engagement, community, and belonging. Recognizing growing interest in competitive gaming, the university launched George Mason Esports in 2018 with support from Lenovo’s esports consulting services, gaming hardware, and event expertise. Lenovo supplied Legion gaming towers, monitors, and accessories while also helping design a dedicated esports arena and support major tournaments. The partnership enabled GAMEason, the university’s gaming convention, to host one of the largest collegiate varsity esports events run by a U.S. university, bringing together 34 teams to compete.
