Getting the Signal with Digital Twin: Leonardo Deploys Digital Twin to Capture In-Flight Behavior of Helicopter Radar

Pages 2 Pages

Leonardo partnered with Altair to develop a multiphysics digital twin of a helicopter radar system affected by in-flight vibration. Physical measurement of antenna deformation and electromagnetic behavior during flight was impossible, creating design uncertainty. Using structural, electromagnetic, and reduced-order modeling tools, the team simulated vibration-induced deformation and its impact on radar performance. The digital twin enabled rapid optimization of the radome and antenna without costly prototypes. The integrated workflow improved collaboration between engineering teams, reduced development time, and provided early insight into performance trade-offs, enabling Leonardo to refine designs before physical production.
