The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) implemented Zero Trust Segmentation to modernize security across its highly distributed campus while meeting University of California system mandates requiring stronger segmentation and vulnerability management. Traditional network segmentation approaches based on physical location could not effectively secure more than 125,000 connected devices—including large numbers of unmanaged BYOD devices—across 427 campus buildings and more than 400 locations. UCSB adopted an agentless Zero Trust architecture that discovers devices automatically, controls east-west traffic, replaces VPN-based remote access with policy-based application connectivity, and enables secure access to university resources without exposing the broader network.
