UCLouvain reduces IT infrastructure costs by emulating physical tape libraries on existing commodity hardware with StarWind Virtual Tape Library (VTL)
Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), one of Belgium’s leading universities, sought to reduce IT infrastructure costs while maintaining reliable backup and data protection for its academic and research environments. Before deploying StarWind Virtual Tape Library (VTL), the institution operated a SAN-based infrastructure running Hyper-V and KVM, supporting a wide range of educational services and workloads. To avoid the cost and complexity of maintaining physical tape systems, UCLouvain implemented StarWind VTL, which emulated physical tape libraries using existing commodity hardware. The solution streamlined backup operations, improved storage efficiency, and enabled long-term data retention without additional specialized equipment. As a result, the university reduced infrastructur
