Designing for Unpredictability: How Adaptive Infrastructure Creates Long-term Value in Data Centers
AI workloads, rising rack densities and changing cooling requirements make fixed data center designs increasingly risky. Vertiv describes how a colocation operator adopted modular thermal infrastructure that could support initial air cooling and transition toward liquid cooling as demand evolved. The design provided 130 MW of initial capacity with room to reach 190 MW, while integrated controls supported energy optimization and predictive maintenance. This flexible approach accelerated capacity deployment, protected infrastructure investments and reduced the risk of future obsolescence.
