Planning Growth for a 50-Vehicle EV Fleet
A mid-sized city near Denver with approximately 1,200 vehicles and 50 EVs set an ambitious goal to reduce fleet emissions by 80% by 2030 but faced challenges managing a growing network of nearly 70 chargers installed through ad hoc purchases. Panasonic analyzed the city’s charging operations, evaluated integration between its charge management system (CMS) and the city’s distributed energy resource management system (DERMS), and developed a comprehensive fleet electrification roadmap. The plan identified optimal charger locations, future infrastructure requirements, procurement standards, funding opportunities, and strategies for managing charging loads and energy costs. As a result, the city secured an $11.7 million grant, gained the ability to optimize charging rates, improve charger reliability, allocate charging costs across departments, and integrate EV charging into broader utility load management programs. Forecasts indicate the city could save more than $800,000 annually through smarter charging and energy management while supporting long-term fleet electrification goals.
