Cost Capitalization of Commissions Under ASC 606
This guide explains seven major considerations for accounting for commission costs under ASC 606 and IFRS 15. Incremental costs incurred to obtain a contract, including commissions, certain SPIFs, MBOs, payroll taxes, and directly related benefits, generally must be capitalized and amortized over the expected customer life or applicable contract period. Costs incurred regardless of contract acquisition remain expenses. Companies must evaluate renewal commissions, determine whether the one-year practical expedient applies, allocate commission costs to individual performance obligations, and establish appropriate amortization schedules. The guide also discusses EBITDA effects, differences between cash and GAAP reporting, and the choice between portfolio and individual-contract methods. Detai
