EU AI Act Quick Reference Guide: Obligations, Risk Categories, and Implementation Guidelines
The EU AI Act is the world’s first comprehensive AI regulation, establishing a risk-based framework that classifies AI systems as unacceptable, high, limited, or minimal risk. High-risk applications—including AI used in hiring, education, credit scoring, critical infrastructure, healthcare, and law enforcement—must meet strict requirements around risk management, data quality, transparency, human oversight, cybersecurity, documentation, and ongoing monitoring. The regulation also introduces obligations for general-purpose AI models and transparency requirements for chatbots, deepfakes, and AI-generated content. Organizations deploying AI in or affecting the EU must assess their systems, implement governance controls, and prepare for phased compliance deadlines through 2027. Noncompliance can result in fines of up to €35 million or 7% of global revenue, making AI governance, accountability, and regulatory readiness critical business priorities.
