Sales Quota Setting: The Operator's Guide to Quotas That Are Aggressive, Fair, and Attainable
Effective quota setting aligns revenue targets with realistic capacity and market opportunity. The process starts with company growth goals, then cascades targets by segment, territory, and role based on historical performance, pipeline coverage, deal size, ramp time, and market potential. Quotas should be challenging but attainable—typically designed so about 60–70% of reps achieve them—to motivate performance without driving burnout or bad behavior. Strong plans account for seasonality, new-hire ramp, and territory differences, and are paired with clear compensation alignment. Ongoing monitoring and adjustment are essential to ensure quotas remain fair, predictable, and tightly connected to overall revenue planning and execution.
