Competition Heats Up in Technology M&A

Scope deals continue to rise, especially in the technology sector, where acquisitions focused on adding new capabilities made up the large majority of major deals in 2020. These transactions far outpaced other industries, pushing total corporate deal value for tech assets to around $200 billion. Competition is intensifying as nontech companies increasingly acquire technology to strengthen their own capabilities, with a growing share of tech deal volume coming from outside the tech sector. At the same time, private equity and other buyers remain active. As competition and regulatory scrutiny increase, success in tech M&A depends on moving quickly, identifying the right strategic capabilities, and executing deals more effectively than rivals.
