The WatchGuard Threat Lab’s Q1 2023 Internet Security Report reveals 52 new ransomware variants and 852 extortion site victims. Notably, 93% of malware over encrypted connections was evasive zero-day malware. Each WatchGuard Firebox blocked an average of 932 malware threats, with Basic Gateway AntiVirus detections up 15%, APT Blocker detections down 66%, and IntelligentAV detections up 24%. Top threats included the Scam.PV email scam, Linux.Downloader deploying cryptominers or backdoors, and the Zuzy malware family, which hijacks Windows browsers. The report offers actionable insights to strengthen security defenses.
