What isn't a Semantic Layer?
A semantic layer is not just for data, a single product, or simply a graph. It connects enterprise knowledge assets such as data, content, people, customers, and products through shared meaning and organizational context. While graphs help relate concepts and attributes, a true semantic layer also depends on metadata, taxonomies, ontologies, and business glossaries to accurately represent enterprise knowledge. It should focus on high-value assets relevant across the organization rather than all transactional content. A semantic layer also cannot be fully automated or AI-generated alone, since domain experts are essential in curating meaning, ensuring alignment, and maintaining accurate knowledge structures across the enterprise.
