2024 API Security Impact Study: Insurance Industry
This report examines how API vulnerabilities threaten insurance services that process claims, financial details, policy information, and other sensitive customer data. It found that 76.7% of insurance organizations experienced an API incident, with average U.S. costs reaching $625,634. The most damaging outcome was lost customer goodwill and churn, followed by reputational harm with leadership and remediation expenses. Only 56.7% had a full API inventory, and just 20.7% knew which APIs returned sensitive data. Key causes included zombie APIs, unintended internet exposure, failed traditional tools, authorization weaknesses, and misconfigurations.
