Breast cancer screening recall rates: A comprehensive quality analysis
The 2024 Breast Cancer Screening Recall Rates Report by Populi analyzes recall rates for mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) among Medicare and commercial beneficiaries. In FY 2023, out of 18.5 million screened individuals, 1.7 million required follow-up imaging within 45 days, yielding a national recall rate of 9.7%, within the CMS standard range of 5–12%. While most states fall within this range, Nevada had a low recall rate of 4.8%, and six states, including Illinois (13.3%) and DC (13.5%), exceeded 12%. High recall rates may lead to unnecessary procedures, while low rates risk missed cancer diagnoses.
