Domestic Migration in 2025: The Great Slowdown
Between 2021 and 2025, Idaho and South Carolina emerged as top domestic migration magnets, each gaining over 3% population through relocations. Other Mountain and Sun Belt states like Nevada, Montana, and Florida also attracted significant inflows, while California, New York, and Illinois experienced notable outmigration driven by high living costs and remote work flexibility. In 2024, interstate migration slowed, with inflows flattening in popular states such as Texas and Florida, indicating a broader stabilization. Phoenix stood out as the only major metro maintaining positive net migration among the largest U.S. cities.
