This report analyzes global medicine use and spending trends from 2009 through projections to 2024, introducing standardized “days of therapy” to compare use across countries. It finds that global medicine use continues to grow, particularly in pharmerging markets, while spending growth is slowing due to pricing pressures and patent expiries. Specialty medicines now account for a growing share of spending, driven primarily by oncology and autoimmune therapies. Despite rising innovation, net manufacturer revenues are constrained by rebates and policy controls. The report concludes that health systems face ongoing tradeoffs between access, affordability, and sustaining pharmaceutical innovation.
