Guidelines for Improving Blockchain’s Environmental, Social and Economic Impact
The WEF’s 2023 guidelines on blockchain highlight how the technology can support sustainability while addressing environmental and social risks. Blockchain can drive transparency, efficiency, and inclusion in areas like supply chains, energy, and finance. However, challenges such as high energy use, e-waste, and unequal access remain. The report recommends three actions: adopt energy-efficient consensus mechanisms, design systems for social inclusion and accessibility, and establish governance models to ensure accountability and equitable outcomes. With responsible design and global cooperation, blockchain can contribute to climate goals, inclusive growth, and resilient digital economies.
