Retail Sector Deep Dive Fraud Targeting Retailers
The 2024 Trustwave Retail Fraud Report shows criminals exploiting retailers through malware like Ducktail and DarkGate, phishing campaigns using fake LinkedIn and Zoom invites, and scams leveraging QuickBooks, Costco, and invoicing platforms. Gift card fraud is rampant, with draining scams, insider threats, and dark web sales causing heavy losses. Fake online stores like those run by BogusBazaar have stolen over $50 billion since 2021. Refund fraud is rising, often enabled by malicious insiders, while PII, credit cards, and bank access are traded widely online. Trustwave urges stronger MFA, staff training, AI-powered fraud detection, and stricter auditing of refund and gift card processes.
