Sonar's 2026 State of Code Developer Survey finds that AI-assisted coding has become mainstream, with most developers using AI daily and expecting AI to generate an increasing share of production code. However, widespread adoption has created a "verification gap": while developers rely heavily on AI, most do not fully trust its output, and fewer than half consistently verify AI-generated code before committing it. Security, reliability, and technical debt remain top concerns, shifting developer effort from writing code to reviewing, testing, and validating AI-generated work. The report concludes that organizations will achieve the greatest gains by combining AI-assisted development with automated code quality, security, and verification practices rather than relying on code generation alone.
