THE GREAT DATA HEIST
Cyberhaven’s 2022 Insider Risk Report analyzes 372,000 data exfiltration incidents across 1.4 million workers and finds insider risk is widespread and increases over time. While 2.5% of employees exfiltrate sensitive data in a typical month, that rises to 9.4% over six months. Client and customer data represents 44.6% of exfiltrated sensitive data, followed by source code at 13.8%. More than half of incidents involve data moving through multiple people or systems before leaving the organization. Personal cloud storage is the leading exfiltration method at 27.5%, followed by personal webmail at 18.7%. Risk also rises around employee departures, often before employers receive notice, highlighting the need to track sensitive data throughout its lifecycle.
