BGP‑LS enables high‑scale distribution of link‑state information beyond a single routing domain by carrying IGP‑derived topology data within BGP messages. While IGPs handle link‑state updates inside an autonomous system, external sharing—such as with ALTO or PCE servers—requires an EGP. BGP‑LS fills this role, supporting SDN architectures by providing controllers with detailed network topology. Service providers, enterprises, and NEMs can use it to validate BGP‑LS implementations and support transitions to SDN, as well as to test PCE performance and scalability in multi‑domain environments.
