Challenges in Next-Gen PON Deployment

Pages 4 Pages

PON equipment must follow standards defined by the ITU and IEEE, including GPON, XGS‑PON, and NG‑PON2. While GPON is most widely deployed today, its downstream and upstream rates of 2.4 Gbps and 1.2 Gbps can no longer meet growing bandwidth demands or support larger subscriber counts. Current GPON and EPON systems lack the scalability needed for future services. Next‑generation PON standards will increase capacity and move toward symmetrical rates, enabling higher throughput and supporting rising end‑user requirements while opening new revenue opportunities for operators.
