Continuous employee screening is an emerging best practice that extends background checks beyond hiring to address post-hire insider risks such as fraud, theft, violence, substance abuse, and credential falsification. Traditional pre-employment screening cannot account for changes that occur during an employee’s tenure, leaving organizations exposed—especially in high-risk roles, regulated industries, and the gig economy. Continuous screening uses periodic or near–real-time monitoring of criminal records and other risk indicators to alert employers to potential threats while balancing privacy, consent, and regulatory compliance. Though it requires clear policies, employee education, and adherence to FCRA requirements, continuous screening is increasingly viewed as a cost-effective way to protect employees, customers, and brand reputation from significant financial, operational, and human harm.
