This white paper presents a reference architecture for modernizing core banking by combining the Banking Industry Architecture Network’s domain model with MongoDB’s document platform. It argues that mainframes, rigid relational schemas, batch processing, vendor lock-in, and point-to-point integrations have created structural technical debt. BIAN provides standardized banking domains, vocabulary, ownership boundaries, and interaction contracts, while MongoDB maps them to flexible JSON documents, Change Streams, schema validation, real-time services, and AI-ready capabilities.
