From Innovation to Integration: The Route Towards Realising the Potential of Wearable Technology to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease
This white paper examines how wearable blood pressure technology could improve hypertension detection and cardiovascular disease prevention in the UK. Unlike traditional cuff-based monitors, wearables can provide continuous, unobtrusive data that supports earlier diagnosis, better treatment adherence, patient self-management, and timely clinical intervention. Their adoption also aligns with NHS plans for preventive, community-based, and digitally enabled care. However, widespread integration requires reliable and clinically validated devices, secure connections with NHS records, real-world performance monitoring, clear evaluation standards, and equitable access. The paper proposes a national framework and pilot approach to move wearable monitoring safely from innovation into routine care.
