No matter what your organization chooses to call them—a near-miss, great-catch, or even a close-call—capturing these occurrences so they can be analyzed and acted upon has tremendous value in reducing accidents and injuries and keeping workers safe. A near-miss is an “almost-accident” or circumstance that didn’t result in an injury or illness but posed a potential safety risk. For example, an employee may trip and almostfall on a factory floor. It’s unlikely this would be reported because few employees want to interrupt their task to report something that really didn’t happen, especially when there wasn’t an injury. Many agree that these near-misses are true leading indicators to potential risks or hazards that are present, and may be the “holy grail” of safety for today’s modern operation.
