Predicting Fiber Breaks and Weak Points

Predicting Fiber Breaks and Weak Points

Pages 6 Pages

A Brillouin‑OTDR was used to characterize long‑distance aerial cables by measuring fiber strain with 10‑meter resolution over 152 km, achieving high precision with a standard deviation of 0.0015 percent. This approach enables operators to detect fiber elongation and identify weak points before failures occur. Because weather and geological conditions continually impose stress on aerial cables, predictive strain measurements allow maintenance teams to intervene early, preserving network integrity and reducing the likelihood of unexpected fiber breaks.
