The 5 Phases of Banking Modernization
This white paper outlines an iterative approach for banks to modernize legacy infrastructure without the disruption and risk of a full rip-and-replace project. The strategy uses an Operational Data Layer (ODL) as a bridge between legacy systems and modern applications. Modernization progresses through five phases: a simple ODL that offloads reads, an enriched ODL combining additional data sources, parallel writes to legacy and modern systems, an ODL-first system of transaction, and finally an ODL that becomes the system of record so legacy infrastructure can be retired. The paper also discusses data-driven and application-driven modernization planning. By centralizing siloed information, enabling real-time analytics, and gradually shifting reads and writes, banks can reduce mainframe depen
