Timestamp Analysis and Three Efficient Ways to Run It with IOTA
This white paper explains why precise packet timestamping is essential for troubleshooting latency, outages, bottlenecks, cyber incidents, and timing-sensitive industrial communications. Accurate timestamps establish when packets were captured and allow engineers to correlate events across devices, plants, regions, and time zones. IOTA appliances timestamp ingress frames through hardware counters with resolutions below 10 nanoseconds. The paper presents three synchronization methods: using one GPS source with a PPS connection to a second IOTA, using separate GPS signals for geographically distant devices, and synchronizing two devices through PPS without GPS for relative delay measurements.
