Belgian public broadcaster VRT needed stronger protection for its 24x7 AWS platform as geopolitical DDoS activity increased. Availability was critical, so the solution had to provide Shield Response Team support, Layer 7 protection, and cost-effective coverage while avoiding false positives. After a successful proof of concept, Cloudar helped VRT deploy AWS Shield Advanced across multiple accounts together with AWS WAF for web application and API protection. Shield Advanced can automatically apply Layer 7 mitigations through configured Web ACLs, while VRT maintains a WAF rulebook based on security best practices. Amazon CloudFront and Route 53 also form part of the architecture. Since implementation, the environment has blocked 47 malicious events, including traffic approaching one million
