Alabama Fiber Network (AFN) is a consortium formed in 2022 by eight local electric cooperatives and technology partners, including Ciena and Arista Networks, to expand high-speed connectivity across Alabama. Officially launched in 2024 with over $200 million in US Treasury funding, AFN aims to bridge the digital divide by delivering at least 400 gigabits of capacity to all 67 counties through an 8,000 km middle-mile fiber network. By September 2024, 67% of the backbone had been completed, reaching 38 counties. The network has begun serving customers, including Sprout Fiber Internet, and continues to expand its high-capacity services across the state.
