NSF NCAR uses the Derecho supercomputer and Altair PBS Professional to model weather conditions that contribute to wildfire risk. Researchers analyze atmospheric data and climate models to forecast heat waves, dry conditions, and fire-prone environments. Simulations have revealed increasing fire frequency and longer peak fire seasons across the western United States. The workload manager ensures efficient execution of complex climate models at scale. These insights enable better preparedness, mitigation strategies, and informed decision-making. By predicting wildfire danger earlier, NSF NCAR’s work helps protect ecosystems, communities, and lives in an era of increasingly extreme climate events.
