UMass Memorial Health Improves Patient Safety, Reduces Labor Costs with Virtual Observation
UMass Memorial Health, the largest health system in central Massachusetts and clinical partner of UMass Chan Medical School, is using virtual observation to improve patient safety while reducing labor costs. Known for advanced medical technology and specialized care, including the region’s only adult Level I Trauma Center and Level III Neonatal ICU, the system expanded its telehealth platform beyond the ICU. By enabling enterprise-wide remote video monitoring, UMass Memorial enhanced patient oversight, reduced the need for in‑room observation staffing, and improved safety for high‑risk patients. The case demonstrates how extending telehealth capabilities can drive operational efficiency while maintaining high standards of patient care across a complex healthcare system.
