HCLTech’s FreeGrip is a next-generation, lightweight surgical robot manipulator designed to improve ergonomics, precision, and surgeon mobility in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Unlike bulky traditional surgical consoles that can isolate surgeons and contribute to fatigue, FreeGrip uses IMU-based motion tracking and potentiometric sensors to capture highly accurate fingertip and wrist movements across multiple degrees of freedom. Testing demonstrated repeatability near 1°, motion tracking speeds up to 720 degrees per second, and 0.05 mm linear displacement sensitivity, making it suitable for precision surgical applications. The detachable, ergonomic design reduces physical strain while enabling more intuitive control and better integration within operating room teams. While current limitations include calibration and fixed reference requirements, the proof-of-concept highlights strong potential for future surgical robotics, rehabilitation, and assistive-device applications through compact, surgeon-centric human-machine interfaces.
