Media App Vulnerabilities Exposed: Why Most Android OTT Apps Need Stronger Protection
Verimatrix analyzed 14 Android OTT applications to determine whether they were prepared for emerging studio security requirements. Although every app used DRM or a secure video player, 93% failed to achieve the baseline level of application protection considered necessary. Only 7% received a standard-security rating, 64% provided only basic protection, and 29% had no meaningful safeguards. Many lacked certificate pinning, leaving user credentials and communications vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. Weak obfuscation, missing anti-tamper controls, exposed strings, poor device binding, and insufficient cryptographic protection also increased the risk of reverse engineering, API abuse, credential theft, and content piracy.
