Logging Mandate Should Put Data To Work
Federal agencies are increasingly required to not just collect but actively use network traffic data to strengthen cybersecurity. Following sophisticated attacks, OMB directed agencies to archive network packet data so they can trace malicious activity and assess damage. The 2021 White House memorandum OMB M‑21‑31 further mandated the retention of cybersecurity event logs to improve incident response and threat hunting. By preserving historical packet data, agencies can reconstruct attacker behavior, identify compromised systems, and enhance overall defense strategies, transforming raw data into actionable security insight.
