Segment Routing emulation, now part of VIAVI, reproduces source‑routing behavior to simplify modern network architectures by removing the complexity of the traditional MPLS control plane. Instead of relying on MPLS signaling, segment routing uses IGPs such as OSPF, IS‑IS, and BGP to distribute segment IDs or forwarding labels. This allows only the ingress node to maintain per‑flow state while still leveraging the MPLS data plane for efficient forwarding. The approach reduces operational overhead, increases scalability, and enables flexible traffic engineering in both service provider and large enterprise environments.
