Chapter VII: Industry 4.0 is Redefining the ‘Smart’ Industry
Industry 4.0 technologies such as IIoT, AI, machine learning, analytics, robotics and edge cloud are enabling manufacturers to create smarter, more connected operations. EY highlights 5G and digital twins as particularly important: 5G provides the speed, low latency and connectivity needed for autonomous vehicles, AI-enabled robots and computer vision, while digital twins allow manufacturers to simulate factories and processes to optimize efficiency and returns. These technologies can improve productivity, quality, sustainability and resilience while reducing disruptions. Success, however, requires thoughtful technology choices, scalable platforms and the right talent and processes, as manufacturers also prepare for Industry 5.0 and greater human-machine collaboration.
