This case study examines whether mass-market smartphones could support dense, low-cost monitoring of ionospheric total electron content in equatorial regions. Keysight’s dual-frequency GSS7000 simulator reproduced known ionospheric delays and scintillation profiles, while signals were radiated inside a shielded anechoic chamber to preserve use of the phone’s internal antenna. Tests compared smartphone observations with a conventional GNSS receiver and revealed an inter-frequency code bias of approximately 136–140 TEC units, code noise near five TEC units in the chamber, and unreliable phase tracking under real-world conditions.
