ArcelorMittal used Altair EDEM to optimize a sinter cooler charging chute at its Fos-sur-Mer facility. The R&D team needed to reduce particle segregation, abrasion, and mechanical stress during hot material charging, which previously caused operational issues. Using DEM simulations, engineers analyzed particle flow behavior, tested different particle sizes, and evaluated filling ratios. The study showed that filling ratio had a greater impact on segregation than particle size. Virtual testing enabled ArcelorMittal to redesign the charging chute without costly physical experiments. The optimized design improved material distribution, enhanced reliability, and provided insights that would have been impossible to obtain through measurement alone.
