VR Steel Used Altair EDEM to Optimize Dragline Performance and Productivity
VR Steel designs heavy mining equipment and needed to improve dragline bucket performance across varied operating conditions. Using Altair EDEM coupled with multibody dynamics, engineers simulated full digging cycles to analyze fill rate, transient loading, and wear patterns. Virtual testing replaced repeated physical prototypes and enabled consistent evaluation of multiple designs. Simulation-driven improvements increased bucket fill levels, shortened cycle times, reduced mass, and lowered operating costs, delivering an overall productivity gain of approximately 2%. The workflow allowed VR Steel to converge faster on optimal designs while minimizing strain and wear, providing customers with more efficient and durable equipment.
